Membership and Benefits

Membership in the Dante Society is open to everyone. While many of our members are professional academics who work as faculty members at colleges and universities, others are high school teachers, or independent scholars, or students, or people who just love reading Dante and want to connect with others who share their passion and find resources to help them learn more about Dante's life, works, and cultural legacy.

Membership Benefits

Membership in the Dante Society provides many benefits:

Finally, but not less importantly, annual membership helps to sustain the ongoing mission of the Society and its expanding outreach efforts by providing critical financial support.

Membership Categories

Whether registering for the first time or renewing your membership, please consider which category from the list below most appropriately reflects your status and desired affiliation. These same categories and annual dues rates are listed on the online membership form, linked below.

  • Regular (including college and university faculty and independent scholars) = $40
  • Student (including undergraduate and graduate students) = $20
  • School Teachers (including primary and secondary school teachers) = $30

For an additional $10, members in the above categories can add a spouse or partner as a secondary joint member. Secondary joint members must reside at the same address and only one copy of Dante Studies will be mailed to the address. Secondary joint members may cast separate ballots in elections.

Members who reside outside the United States must pay an additional $11 to cover international postage and handling. This amount is automatically added to membership dues during the "checkout" process for online payments.

Plan on remaining a member of the Society for many years? Consider becoming a life member by making a one-time payment of $1,265, commemorating the year of Dante's birth.

Want to provide extra support for the Society this year? All contributions, except for annual membership dues, which support your subscription to Dante Studies, are tax-deductible to the full extent allowable by law. Optional contributions may be made when registering or renewing your membership or via our online donation form at any time.

Joining or Renewing

Joining or renewing your membership is easy. Just follow the links below to complete or update your profile, pay dues, or make an additional tax-deductible gift to the Society. The membership year runs from January 1 through December 31. Dues received on or after September 1 are applied to the following calendar year (hence, if you join for the first time on September 1, you will not receive your first issue of our annual journal, Dante Studies, until the issue for that year is published; however, you will have online access to previously published issues of Dante Studies as soon as membership is activated (see "Access Dante Studies" elsewhere on this website for details).

Please note that all online payments are made using a secure third-party site. Payment receipts and credit card charges will be listed as originating from "Johns Hopkins University Press" (not the Dante Society of America). At this time, major credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover, may be used, but PayPal and electronic bank transfers are not supported.

If you prefer, you may download a copy of our membership registration/renewal form and mail it together with a check or money order according to the instructions on the form.

Gift membership? If you would like to sponsor a gift membership for someone else, simply download and complete a membership form with their contact information, and include a check or your credit card payment details. Please also add a note to the form indicating that it is gift membership to ensure proper processing. Feel free to contact our secretary at [email protected] with any questions.

Electronic Mailing List

The Dante Society of America maintains an electronic mailing list to serve as a forum for announcements pertaining the activities of the Dante Society of America and other major Dante-related events. All postings are moderated by the Dante Society. Please review our mailing list policy for further details.

All new members of the Society are added to the list on a monthly basis. Members whose membership status requires annual renewal, but who do not respond to renewal invitations may be removed from the list. Access to the list is a benefit of membership for members only.

The list is maintained as a Google Group. Members may view the list archives and update their subscription settings through Google Groups. You do not need to have a Gmail account in order to be subscribed to and receive messages from the list, though some Group features are available only to Gmail users.

If you questions about the mailing list or need assistance updating your subscription, including changes to your email address, please write to [email protected]. Note that this mailing list is not maintained by Johns Hopkins University Press, so updating the email address associated with your membership record does not automatically update your mailing list subscription.

Finding Other Members

Current members have access to a searchable online membership directory that can be used to find and contact other members. Note that all members can decide whether or not to allow their email and postal addresses and phone numbers to be displayed to other members via the directory. To check and update your own settings, simply login to your membership profile and follow the links to edit your address information.

A complete list of members from the previous year is also published in our annual journal, Dante Studies, and, since 2014, here on our website.
